So I’ve been wanting to try out a different shading style I picked up from an artist I’ve been following, so I picked out a few pictures to test it out as well as time how long it takes. The first picture I chose was a Kurome pic from one of my previous request pages.

Overall, this style has a lot more soft shade detail, with each major part (the hair, skin, and clothes) having twice as many shading layers. What I like the most about this style is the hair. It’s not as prominent with dark colored hair, but it a lot better than what I’ve done in the past in my opinion. Still, with so many shading layers and detail, my coloring time has subsequently spiked as well. This is pretty much “Full-Shade” now and will have a price raise as far as commissions go.

Also, despite how nice this is, at the same time, it’s most likely not a shading style I want to use that much, since I like to see a lot of my stuff in color. Think this might just be the shading style that I use when I either want to impress people or want to give to a picture I really like.

Anyway, hope you all like this!

The second picture that I tested my new shading style on. This was actually the second of a pair of pictures I made featuring Lucy and Brandish from Fairy Tail and is the sequel to this picture.

If you compare the two, you can see a lot of differences in the shading, mainly with how I shaded Lucy’s boots. The pattern on Brandish’s coat is also different, but that’s because I didn’t know the actual color at the time as there was no proper reference. There is also a significant different in how I shaded the furry part around her neck. Also, since both girls (mainly Lucy) have bright hair, you can see more of the detail that results from this shading style.

Gift Wrapped Erika

The last of the pictures that I tested my current shading style on of my OC, Erika. I chose this on mainly because Erika’s hair being blue is neither too dark or too bright, so it served as a middle ground.

Needless to say, because of how much hair there was, the time it took to color was twice as long, even by this style’s standards. Of course to balance it out, the coloring time for the clothing (which is practically non-existent) was shorter than usual, though if there were clothing that wouldn’t matter. This actually makes me even more unsure of the pricing for full-shade commissions since now it seems that the more hair a character has, the longer it’ll take to shade. ^^;

Anyway, like the other two, I’m really proud of how this came out. Really like the new style of shading despite how long it takes.

That’s all the pictures for now! I hope you enjoyed them! Be sure to check them out and leave a comment or two in the Art Gallery!
